Mick Jagger conoce a Keith Richards y a Brian Jones, juntos encuentran como punto en común su afición por el blues norteamericano (el interpretado por músicos tales como Muddy Waters, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, etc). Deciden formar una banda de Rhythm, El resto de la banda en sus inicios lo forman: Bill Wyman (bajo), Charlie Watts (batería) y el pianista Ian Stewart. Este último a la larga no es miembro fijo de la banda sino colaborador.
